Elijah Battiste, Armwood High School to Provide Support After Weekend Multi-Vehicle Crash.

Hillsborough County Public Schools has confirmed that additional counseling and support services will be available for students at Armwood High School following a tragic crash that occurred over the weekend. The incident, which took place Saturday night, involved multiple vehicles and has deeply affected the school community.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash happened along State Road 574 near Chastain Road. Investigators reported that a Nissan Versa, driven by a 40-year-old man from Mulberry, was traveling eastbound, while a Volkswagen Passat driven by 17-year-old Elijah Battiste was heading westbound.

Preliminary findings indicate that the two vehicles collided near the roadway, leading to a serious impact. Following the initial collision, both vehicles came to a stop in the roadway. Authorities say a third vehicle, identified as a Ford F-150, later approached and struck the Volkswagen.

Officials reported that the driver of the Ford left the scene on foot after the incident and has not yet been located. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their efforts to identify and find the individual as part of the ongoing investigation.

Emergency responders transported both drivers involved in the initial collision to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Despite medical care, Battiste later passed away. Authorities have not provided an update on the current condition of the other driver.

Investigators have not yet determined why the Nissan Versa entered the opposing lane of traffic. Officials are examining all possible contributing factors, including road conditions and other circumstances surrounding the crash.

The loss has had a significant emotional impact on students and staff at Armwood High School. In response, school officials have arranged for grief counselors and support teams to be available on campus to assist those who may need help coping with the situation.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the third vehicle and its driver to come forward. Such details could assist investigators in building a clearer understanding of what happened.

The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that the investigation remains active, and further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
