Tevin Burney, Jarrett Godfrey, Durham Shooting Claims Two Lives.
Durham police have confirmed that two men died in a shooting Friday night. Authorities identified the victims as 23-year-old Tevin Burney and 26-year-old Jarrett Godfrey, both residents of Durham.
Officers were called to the scene around midnight on North Roxboro Street near Old Oxford Road after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found three individuals inside a vehicle who had been shot. Burney and Godfrey were pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was also injured was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover.
Police have not released information about any suspects or the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Authorities are actively investigating and are asking anyone with information to contact Durham Police Investigator A. Junker.
The shooting comes just hours after city and county leaders held a meeting to discuss strategies to reduce gun violence. This meeting was part of a three-phase plan aimed at addressing violent crime in Durham. Earlier reports indicated that violent crime in the city had declined nearly 17% in 2025, though some residents feel further action is necessary.
Renee Johnson, who has lived in Durham for three years, expressed concerns about ongoing violence. She emphasized the importance of community efforts, particularly programs focused on mentoring youth. “You hear a lot of shootings with the youth involved, and I think there needs to be more programs for mentoring youth,” Johnson said.
City leaders continue to emphasize the need for collaboration between law enforcement, community organizations, and residents to maintain safety and prevent further incidents. The latest shooting highlights ongoing challenges despite recent efforts to curb violence.
Residents are encouraged to stay aware of safety measures, participate in community programs, and report any information that may assist authorities.
