SISTERS, OREGON — Authorities are investigating a tragic crash in downtown Sisters that left an 81-year-old woman dead.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision on Friday evening, February 6, at approximately 7:24 p.m. The crash occurred in front of Rancho Viejo on East Cascade Avenue (Highway 20).

Officials said the pedestrian, an 81-year-old woman from Bend, was crossing the roadway when she was struck by a vehicle. She received medical attention at the scene before being transported to St. Charles-Bend, where she later passed away.

The driver involved, a 21-year-old woman from La Pine, was taken into custody at the scene. She was booked at the Deschutes County Adult Jail on multiple charges, including Criminally Negligent Homicide, DUII (driving under the influence of intoxicants), and Reckless Driving, according to authorities.

The crash prompted the temporary closure of Cascade Avenue for approximately three and a half hours while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District, Black Butte Ranch Police Department, and the Oregon State Police in responding to the incident. Authorities noted that their coordinated efforts ensured both public safety and a thorough investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has photos or video of the incident to contact the Sheriff’s Office through the non-emergency line at (541) 693-6911. Officials said information from the public can be valuable in helping them reconstruct the events leading to the tragedy.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents to remain cautious when driving or walking in high-traffic areas, especially during evening hours. They emphasized the importance of staying alert and following traffic safety laws to prevent similar incidents.

Authorities also expressed condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life, highlighting the impact of such tragedies on the community. The Sheriff’s Office said their focus is on completing a careful and thorough investigation while supporting those affected by the incident.

This collision serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility between drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant on the road. Officials stressed the need for caution, particularly in areas with crosswalks and heavy pedestrian traffic.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates as more verified information becomes available. Residents and community members are encouraged to report any relevant information to help officials in their efforts.

The Sheriff’s Office, along with local emergency responders, continues to prioritize both road safety and public awareness, hoping that incidents like this can be prevented in the future.

Community members are invited to keep the victim’s family in their thoughts during this difficult time as authorities work to fully understand the circumstances of the crash.
