Ndiaga Diagne, Two Dies, 14 Injured in Early Morning Shooting in Austin; Suspect Shot by Police.
Authorities say two people were died and 14 others injured in a shooting outside a bar in Austin shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. Police confirmed that officers also fatally shot a suspect during the incident.
According to the Austin Police Department, the suspect was identified as a 53-year-old man from Pflugerville, Texas. Officials said he was a naturalized U.S. citizen. Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that investigators believe the suspect drove around the area near the bar multiple times before firing from his vehicle toward people gathered outside and on the patio.
Authorities said the suspect then drove along Sixth Street, parked, exited his vehicle with a second firearm, and continued shooting at individuals walking nearby. Officers confronted the suspect shortly afterward and discharged their weapons. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Police recovered two firearms.
During a press briefing, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Alex Doran said investigators found indicators suggesting possible ties to terrorism. However, he emphasized that it is too early to determine a motive as the investigation remains ongoing.
Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz confirmed that multiple victims were transported to area hospitals. Several remain in critical condition.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson commended first responders for their swift action, stating that their response helped prevent further harm. Greg Abbott also issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims and their families and announced plans to increase law enforcement patrols in the area.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
