Louis Boone, Norfolk State University Student Died in Dumfries Shooting – How Can Communities Work Together to Prevent Violence?
The Norfolk State University community is mourning the loss of a student who died in a shooting in Dumfries earlier this week.
Authorities have identified the victim as 18-year-old Louis Boone, a freshman from Dumfries studying mass communication and general broadcast at NSU. Boone was also a photographer for the university’s student paper, The Spartan Echo, where he was remembered as a positive and motivated presence. In a social media post, the paper wrote, “Boone contributed meaningfully to the paper, and his impact will not be forgotten. His presence and ambition to serve will be deeply missed.”
Boone was actively involved on campus as a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Content Creator Club. The university sent a letter to students and staff on Wednesday extending condolences to Boone’s family. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
The Dumfries Police Department reported that the shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. on March 9 near Potomac Shores Parkway and Dunnington Place. Police say several people were playing basketball on a local court when a confrontation occurred with another group. During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged, and the groups dispersed.
Officers responding to the scene found Boone and other victims with gunshot injuries. Boone was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Four other individuals, aged 16 to 20, were also injured in the incident and are expected to recover. Authorities have said the shooting does not appear to have been random.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing. Police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward and assist detectives.
This tragedy underscores the importance of community safety, communication, and awareness. Students, families, and local residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, look out for one another, and support local initiatives aimed at preventing violence and fostering safe public spaces.
