The incident occurred near milepost 68, close to Idanha, and was reported at approximately 11 a.m. Authorities said a blue Hyundai IONIQ, driven by 55-year-old Curtiss Joseph Scholl of Sisters, was traveling westbound when it attempted to pass another vehicle. For reasons that remain under investigation, Scholl lost control of the car, which ultimately struck a tree.

The passenger, 53-year-old Kellie Jay Scholl, also of Sisters, was pronounced dead at the scene. Curtiss Scholl was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. Officials have not released details on his current condition, but he is receiving medical care.

Both individuals were well-known in the local education community. Curtiss Scholl served as principal of Sprague High School from 2009 to 2015 and is currently the superintendent of the Sisters School District. Kellie Scholl was the head volleyball coach at McNary High School between 2011 and 2015. Their contributions to local schools and students have been remembered by colleagues and community members, who expressed shock and sadness at the news of the crash.

Oregon State Police indicated that the highway was impacted for roughly four hours while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. The crash site was cleared once initial evidence collection and documentation were complete.

Authorities emphasized that the cause of the crash remains under investigation. They are reviewing multiple factors, including roadway conditions, vehicle speed, and other circumstances that may have contributed to the loss of control. No additional information about the crash has been released at this time.

This tragic event has had a profound impact on the local community, particularly those connected to the educational institutions where Curtiss and Kellie Scholl served. Former colleagues, students, and community members have shared condolences with the families and expressed their sympathy for the loss of life and the injuries sustained.

No official obituary or funeral arrangements have yet been publicly announced for Kellie Scholl, and the family has not released details regarding memorial services. The community is expected to come together to honor her contributions and support those affected.

Incidents like this underscore the importance of caution on highways and remind drivers of the potential hazards, even during routine travel. Law enforcement officials often urge drivers to be attentive, drive at safe speeds, and exercise caution when passing other vehicles, particularly on rural roads.

Oregon State Police have asked anyone with information regarding the crash to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. Updates will be shared when verified information becomes available, and authorities continue to coordinate with emergency responders and local agencies as part of their review.

The community continues to mourn the loss of Kellie Scholl while supporting Curtiss Scholl during his recovery, reflecting on the lasting contributions both made to education in the area.
