Jabranden Embry Brooks, Young Life Lost in Highway 178 Crash, Coroner Confirms.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the teenager who died following a traffic incident on Highway 178 in Bakersfield last month. The victim was 14-year-old Jabranden Embry Brooks, according to officials.

The incident occurred on January 25, 2026, and remains under investigation by the Bakersfield Police Department. Authorities say officers first became aware of a vehicle that had been reported stolen earlier that day. At approximately 5:17 p.m., officers located the vehicle near Flower Street and King Street.

Police said the vehicle, a 2014 Hyundai Sonata, had reportedly been taken from a parking lot near Valley Plaza earlier in the day. Witnesses told officers they observed several juveniles near the vehicle while alarms were sounding, before it was driven away at a high rate of speed.

Officers attempted to follow the vehicle, but police stated that the situation escalated quickly. When the vehicle entered eastbound Highway 178, officers determined that continuing the pursuit posed safety concerns and terminated the pursuit in accordance with department policy.

Shortly afterward, police said the vehicle was involved in a crash near the Baker Street overpass. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and transported the vehicle’s occupants to Kern Medical for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the driver later died, while two other juveniles sustained serious injuries and continue to receive medical care. The coroner later identified the deceased teen as Jabranden Embry Brooks of Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield Police Department stated that the incident is being reviewed under the department’s critical incident policy, a standard process for cases involving serious injury or loss of life. As part of that procedure, the two officers involved in the earlier pursuit were placed on routine, paid administrative leave, which officials emphasized is not disciplinary in nature.

This tragic event has deeply affected the Bakersfield community and has sparked conversations about youth safety, decision-making, and the importance of prevention and early intervention. Community members and local leaders have expressed sympathy for the family and loved ones affected by the loss.

Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation remains ongoing. Officials say they are committed to a thorough and transparent review to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the community mourns, residents are encouraged to support one another and to focus on resources that help protect young people and prevent future tragedies. Updates will be shared if and when verified information becomes available from official sources.
