The Arizona Department of Public Safety is mourning the loss of Trooper-Paramedic Hunter Bennett and Aviation Supervisor Pilot Robert Skankey, two highly respected professionals who were killed in a helicopter crash near Flagstaff while assisting law enforcement during an active incident.
At a news conference held two days after the tragedy, officials described the pair as more than colleagues. They were remembered as trusted mentors, teammates, and public servants who dedicated their lives to protecting others.
Bennett and Skankey were aboard Ranger 56, a DPS helicopter that had departed from Kingman to provide air support for Flagstaff police officers responding to a dangerous situation in a residential area. The helicopter arrived over the scene around 10 p.m. and went down approximately 20 minutes later while assisting officers on the ground.
Arizona Department of Public Safety Colonel Jeffrey Glover expressed deep sorrow during the briefing, saying the loss has been felt across the entire department. He described both men as professionals who embodied service, commitment, and care for others.
Robert Skankey joined DPS as a helicopter pilot in 2021 and was assigned to the Western Air Rescue unit. In June 2024, he was promoted to aviation supervisor. Before joining DPS, Skankey served in the United States Marine Corps from 1988 to 2010, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He was widely respected for his experience, leadership, and dedication. Skankey is survived by his wife and their four children.
Hunter Bennett joined DPS in June 2022 as a cadet state trooper. In April 2024, he transferred to Western Air Rescue, where he served as a trooper-paramedic. Later that year, he married his high school sweetheart, marking a joyful chapter in his life that was tragically cut short.
Officials confirmed the helicopter had undergone a routine inspection on January 29, and DPS leaders emphasized that their aircraft are regularly inspected and maintained to strict safety standards.
Flagstaff Police Chief Sean Connolly noted that the helicopter crew played a critical role during a lengthy and dangerous situation, helping provide awareness and safety for officers responding on the ground. Air support, he said, offers vital assistance in complex and high-risk environments.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash, working closely with DPS.
