Howard Doyle, Police Confirm Identity of Man Who Died in Addison County.
WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS — Authorities have identified the man who died following a police-involved shooting over the weekend in Waukegan, according to officials.
Waukegan police said officers were called to a home in the 100 block of Leith Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a report involving a man experiencing a serious personal crisis. Officers responded to the scene to assess the situation and provide assistance.
Police have not released details about what occurred during the interaction between officers and the man inside the residence. Officials said only that the incident resulted in officers discharging their weapons.
Paramedics, who had been positioned nearby as a precaution, were brought to the scene shortly after. Authorities said the man was evaluated by medical personnel and pronounced dead at the location.
The individual was later identified by officials as a 58-year-old Waukegan resident. His name was released after appropriate notification procedures were followed.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Monday as part of the standard process in cases involving fatalities. According to the coroner’s findings, the man died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. No additional details about the injuries were made public.
Police emphasized that investigations into officer-involved shootings follow established protocols to ensure transparency and accountability. As part of that process, the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit has taken over the investigation.
The Public Integrity Unit is responsible for independently reviewing incidents involving the use of force by law enforcement officers. This includes examining evidence, reviewing body-worn camera footage if available, interviewing witnesses, and evaluating whether policies and procedures were followed.
Waukegan police said they are cooperating fully with the state-led investigation. Until that review is complete, the department noted that it will have limited information to share publicly.
Officials have not provided a timeline for when the investigation may conclude. Authorities said updates will be released when verified information becomes available and when it is appropriate to do so.
Community members have expressed concern and interest in understanding what led up to the incident. Law enforcement leaders acknowledged the seriousness of such cases and stressed the importance of a thorough and impartial review.
Police also reminded the public that situations involving personal or mental health crises can be complex and unpredictable. They encouraged individuals and families facing similar challenges to seek help through local support services, crisis response teams, or emergency resources.
At this time, the incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit. Officials said the goal of the inquiry is to provide a clear and factual account of what happened, based on evidence and established investigative standards.
Further information is expected to be shared by authorities once the investigation progresses and official findings are completed.
