Winthrop authorities have identified the pedestrian who died following a crash on U.S. Route 202 Wednesday evening. Police Chief Paul Ferland confirmed that the victim was 44-year-old Eric O. Stinson of Pittston. Stinson was transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where he later died from his injuries.

According to a Wednesday news release from Winthrop Police, the crash occurred just before 6 p.m. near the Winthrop Veterinary Hospital. A black 2015 Dodge pickup truck, driven eastbound by 51-year-old Merton Ward of Augusta, struck Stinson. The speed limit on that section of road is 55 mph, authorities noted.

Winthrop police, fire, and ambulance personnel responded to the scene, and Route 202 was closed for approximately three and a half hours. Maine State Police reconstructed the crash, with assistance from Monmouth Police and Maine State Police. The Kennebec-Somerset District Attorney’s Office was also notified.

Officials have not indicated any charges at this time. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Police are reminding residents to exercise caution on highways, especially in areas with pedestrian activity, and to remain alert while driving. Additional updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
