A University of Colorado Boulder football player has died following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, according to authorities. He was 23.
The Colorado State Patrol reported that Dominiq Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla in Boulder County when he lost control on a curve. Investigators said the vehicle struck a guardrail, then an electrical pole, and rolled down an embankment. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police stated that a preliminary investigation indicates speed is suspected to be a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation.
Ponder was a quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes. The 6-foot-5 sophomore from Opa Locka, Florida, began his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman before transferring to Colorado. He appeared in two games last season.
The team was scheduled to begin spring practice on Monday.
Head coach Deion Sanders shared a message on social media expressing condolences to Ponder’s family and describing him as a respected leader. Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion also posted a tribute, calling Ponder a joy to coach.
Athletic director Fernando Lovo said Ponder exemplified qualities valued by teammates and coaches, including leadership and determination. The university’s athletic department announced that counseling resources would be made available to players and staff.
Teammates also shared messages of remembrance, reflecting on Ponder’s impact on and off the field.
