Authorities have identified a teenager who died following a water-related incident at a popular state park in Big Sur, California.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the swimmer as 17-year-old DJ Neo Gallardo of Salinas, California.
According to officials with California State Parks, emergency responders received a call around 1 p.m. Saturday reporting that a male swimmer needed help in the water near a swimming area at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, close to the Big Sur River Gorge.
Authorities said the teen was recovered from the water shortly before 2 p.m. and was later pronounced dead following what officials described as an incident in the water. The official cause of death has not yet been released and is pending a medical examination.
The Salinas Union High School District confirmed that Gallardo was a student at Everett Alvarez High School.
In a statement, the district expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying the decease of a young student has had a profound impact on the school community. Officials extended condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones during what they described as a very difficult time.
School leaders also noted that the loss will be deeply felt throughout the Everett Alvarez High School campus and across the district.
