Derek J. Fisher – Authorities in Steuben County are investigating a residential fire in the Village of Bath that resulted in the death of a local man over the weekend and left several first responders needing medical care.
According to the Bath Police Department, the incident occurred late Saturday night at a two-story home on Warden Street. Emergency crews were dispatched to the residence just before 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire. When the first police officers and firefighters arrived, they observed an active fire affecting the front portion of the home.
Officials said multiple law enforcement agencies responded quickly, including members of the Bath Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Police. Before fire crews were fully on scene, officers entered the residence in an effort to locate anyone inside. During that search, they found a man later identified as 35-year-old Derek J. Fisher of Bath.
Authorities reported that Fisher was removed from the home and emergency medical care was immediately provided. He was then transported to Ira Davenport Hospital in Bath for further treatment. Despite medical efforts, Fisher later died from injuries related to the fire. His death has been ruled accidental pending the outcome of the fire investigation.
In addition to Fisher, three first responders were also taken to area hospitals as a precaution. Two Bath police officers and one sheriff’s deputy were treated for smoke-related injuries. Officials said all three received care and were later released. Their actions were praised by local leaders, who noted the risks responders face when entering dangerous situations to help others.
Fire officials stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene and review all available information to understand how the blaze started. As is standard procedure, investigators will look at factors such as the structure, utilities, and any potential accidental causes. No foul play has been suggested at this time.
No obituary information or funeral arrangements for Fisher have been released publicly. Family members are expected to share memorial details when they are ready. Community members have begun expressing condolences and support for Fisher’s loved ones, as well as appreciation for the efforts of first responders involved in the rescue attempt.
Local officials reminded residents of the importance of fire safety, including maintaining working smoke detectors, having escape plans in place, and reporting emergencies as quickly as possible. They also emphasized the value of inter-agency cooperation during emergencies, noting that the coordinated response played a key role in addressing the situation as swiftly as possible.
The investigation into the fire remains ongoing. Authorities said additional information will be released if and when it becomes available. In the meantime, the Village of Bath continues to mourn the loss of a community member while acknowledging the dedication and bravery shown by emergency personnel during the response.
