Cobretti Rae Rodriguez, San Benito High Student Dies in Tragic Traffic Accident — How Can Communities Keep Students Safe?

San Benito Consolidated Independent School District has identified the student who died in an auto-pedestrian accident earlier this month.

Officials confirmed that 17-year-old Cobretti Rae Rodriguez, a junior at San Benito High School and member of the Greyhound Athletic Program, passed away following the crash.

Harlingen police responded at about 11:30 p.m. on March 1 to the 2800 block of North Expressway 83 after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Emergency medical services transported Rodriguez to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

San Benito CISD expressed condolences to Rodriguez’s family and friends, highlighting his contributions as a student-athlete and the kindness he shared with those around him. “His legacy of friendship, loyalty, and compassion will not be forgotten,” the district said in a statement.

In honor of Rodriguez, the scoreboard at Bobby Morrow Stadium will remain illuminated during services scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m. A mass is scheduled on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, and the community is encouraged to reflect on safety measures for students and pedestrians in the area.

💬 This tragedy raises an important question for all communities: what steps can be taken to prevent accidents involving students and pedestrians, especially in busy areas?

Rodriguez’s passing is a reminder of the importance of vigilance, safety, and community support for young people.
