Bonnie Bouffard, Woman Died in Florida Turnpike Crash During Police Pursuit; Suspect in Custody.
One woman has died and another is in custody following a law enforcement pursuit involving a stolen vehicle on the Florida Turnpike on Thursday, according to authorities.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the pursuit began in Deerfield Beach after officers attempted to stop a stolen truck equipped with a tracking device. Officials identified the driver as 52-year-old Anna Giza. Authorities reported that during the attempted stop, the suspect vehicle struck patrol units from Coconut Creek Police and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, leading to a multi-agency chase.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said the pursuit ended near the Sunrise Boulevard exit after deputies conducted a PIT maneuver. Before coming to a stop, the suspect vehicle collided with another car. The driver of that vehicle, 70-year-old Bonnie Bouffard, was pronounced dead.
Giza was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. Authorities said she faces multiple felony charges, including felony murder and grand theft auto.
Two law enforcement officers whose patrol vehicles were struck were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office stated that its Homicide and Violent Crimes units, along with Internal Affairs, are investigating the incident. The case will also be reviewed by the agency’s Pursuit Review Board in accordance with department policy.
Officials noted that pursuit policies outline when deputies may initiate or terminate chases based on public safety considerations. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released as they become available.
