Andrew Winter, Fatal Highway 59 Crash Under Investigation in Wyoming.
Authorities are investigating a serious crash in Wyoming that left one man dead and another hospitalized after a collision on a rural highway.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, troopers were dispatched at approximately 8:42 p.m. on March 1 to a crash along Wyoming Highway 59 near milepost 35, about 35 miles north of Douglas, Wyoming.
Preliminary findings indicate that a Volkswagen Tiguan traveling northbound left the roadway on the right side. Investigators say the driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to cross into the southbound lane where it collided with an oncoming Toyota Tundra.
Authorities identified the driver of the Tiguan as 36-year-old Andrew Winter of Torrington, Wyoming. Officials said he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota Tundra, Christopher Thomas, 39, of Buffalo, Wyoming, was seriously injured in the crash. According to troopers, he was transported by medical helicopter to Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming for treatment.
Investigators reported that the driver of the Tiguan was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Officials say the role of other factors in the collision remains under investigation as authorities continue reviewing evidence from the scene.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about roadway safety in the state. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the number of fatalities on Wyoming roadways has reached 21 so far in 2026. That figure compares with 15 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025 and 11 in 2024.
Officials remind drivers to follow traffic safety practices, including wearing seat belts and maintaining control of their vehicles, especially on rural highways where conditions can change quickly.
Authorities say the investigation remains active as they work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
