Authorities in Berkeley Township, New Jersey, are investigating a deadly early-morning shooting that claimed three lives on Fairwood Avenue. The Ocean County Regional SWAT Team responded to reports of gunfire around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, officers observed a man entering the home and heard additional shots from inside. After entering the residence, law enforcement found two adults deceased from apparent gunshot wounds: 61-year-old Allan Russell and 60-year-old Michelle Russell, the homeowners.
A third victim, 38-year-old Deonna Stewart, was found approximately 50 yards from the home. Investigators say she was living with her parents, the Russells, and that her three children were unharmed inside the home. Authorities identified the shooter as 37-year-old Vaughn Stewart, who was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and later pronounced dead at Community Medical Center in Toms River. Vaughn and Deonna Stewart were the parents of the three children and had been living separately.
Officials report that Vaughn Stewart entered the home, fatally shot the Russells, and then pursued Deonna Stewart outside, fatally wounding her before returning inside and taking his own life. The three children found unharmed are now under police protection.
Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots just before dawn, with one resident initially mistaking the sounds for fireworks. Surveillance footage from a doorbell camera captured the gunfire.
Authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to better understand the events leading up to the shootings.
