A woman has died following a shooting early Monday on the near southwest side of Indianapolis, according to authorities. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said officers responded around 1:15 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 1300 block of South Sheffield Avenue, near West Morris Street and South Belmont Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located a woman suffering from a gunshot wound and in critical condition. Emergency medical personnel transported her to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police have not released the woman’s identity pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators have also not shared details about a possible suspect or what may have led to the shooting. Authorities indicated that detectives are working to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses.

The incident remains under active investigation.
