Eslam Ahmed Hegazy, Vestal Man Dies After Police-Involved Shooting During Mental Health Incident.
Authorities report that a man in Vestal died following a police-involved shooting during a mental health crisis.
According to the Vestal Police Department, officers responded around 11:36 a.m. on February 25 to 581 Sequoia Lane after receiving a report of an individual in crisis. Upon arrival, officers said the man was holding a knife and threatening self-harm.
Officials stated that officers repeatedly asked the individual to put down the knife. During the encounter, he reportedly threw an object at officers and advanced toward them while armed, prompting them to discharge their weapons. The man was struck and transported to a medical facility.
The New York State Police confirmed on February 26 that the individual, identified as 38-year-old Eslam Ahmed Hegazy, died from his injuries.
The incident has been referred to the New York State Attorney General’s Office for an independent investigation. Officials have asked that all inquiries regarding the case be directed to the Attorney General’s Office.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional information will be shared once confirmed.
