Jamal Elijah, Austin Police Identify Victim in Early Morning Homicide Near Gus Garcia Recreation Center.
Authorities have identified the victim of a homicide that occurred early Sunday morning in North Austin. According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded around 12:43 a.m. on February 15 to reports of a shooting at the Gus Garcia Recreation Center, located off East Rundberg Lane.
When officers arrived, they found 32-year-old Jamal Elijah with apparent gunshot injuries. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, he was pronounced deceased at 1:07 a.m., police said.
Authorities confirmed that a second man was also injured in the incident. He was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates that Elijah was at the recreation center with friends when he was confronted by a group of individuals. Detectives believe the shooting occurred during that encounter. Officials have not released further details about what may have led up to the incident.
The Austin Police Department stated that surveillance video from the area shows individuals of interest whom detectives are working to identify. No arrests have been announced as of this time.
