The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday evening in Hidalgo County.

According to DPS, the crash happened around 7:10 p.m. on Mile 14 between FM-88 and Mile 6 West. Troopers responded to the scene and began a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities reported that a GMC Envoy, carrying a driver and one passenger, was traveling eastbound on Mile 14. Investigators believe the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control. The SUV left the roadway on the south side and entered a nearby sugar cane field, where it overturned.

DPS identified the driver as 34-year-old Homero Castillo Coronado of Weslaco. Officials said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger was transported to McAllen Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Authorities have not released additional details about the passenger’s condition.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors. No further information has been made available at this time.
