Linda Davis, Beloved Hesse K-8 Teacher Dies in Crash During ICE Chase in Savannah.

Authorities in Chatham County are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Monday morning near Whitefield Avenue and the Truman Parkway in Savannah.

According to the Chatham County Police Department, officers responded around 7:45 a.m. after a collision involving a vehicle being pursued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Preliminary reports indicate that ICE agents attempted to stop a man identified as Oscar Vasquez Lopez, who did not comply and fled, leading to a pursuit in the area.

During the chase, Lopez’s vehicle struck a vehicle carrying Linda Davis, a teacher at Hesse K-8 School. Davis, a longtime and beloved staff member, was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Lopez sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been arrested by Chatham County police, facing charges of first-degree vehicular homicide.

The Chatham County Police Department noted that its officers were not involved in the pursuit and were unaware of the ICE operation in the area.

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools confirmed the loss of Davis, describing her as a cherished member of the Hesse K-8 community. In response, the district has provided additional counseling support for students and staff this week. Principal Alonna McMullen emphasized that guidance has been given to staff for addressing the situation with students, and that counseling personnel are available for anyone in need of support.

Monday morning’s crash also temporarily closed Whitefield Avenue at the Truman Parkway in both directions. Chatham County EMS reported that one patient was trapped and required extrication before being transported to the hospital in critical condition. The roadway reopened later that morning.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and ICE’s involvement. The Chatham County Police Department urges anyone with information about the incident to contact local authorities.

The school district and community are mourning the loss of a teacher whose impact on students and colleagues was deeply felt. Support resources have been made available to help families and staff cope with this tragic event.
