HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is actively investigating an officer‑involved shooting that took place early Friday morning, January 23 in Hardeeville.

According to official statements and local reporting, officers from the Hardeeville Police Department responded just after 4:30 a.m. to a call for assistance in the area of the Super 8 Motel and Shell gas station near Exit 5 off Interstate 95.

When law enforcement encountered a person matching the description from the initial call, an altercation occurred and gunfire was exchanged.

As a result of the incident:

  • A 19‑year‑old man, later identified by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office as Jayden Holloway‑Caldwell of Pawley’s Island, S.C., died from his injuries.
  • A Hardeeville police officer was also shot and taken to a hospital, where officials say they are recovering.

SLED, which investigates shootings involving law enforcement in South Carolina, is continuing its inquiry and collecting evidence. Officials have not released further details at this time and say the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities have emphasized that there is no known ongoing threat to public safety connected to the incident.
