🚨Samuel Lookadoo, Lubbock Man Dies in Early Morning Highway Crash in Martin County — What Led to the Collision?
Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that occurred early Monday morning in Martin County, leaving one man dead and another injured. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), troopers responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle crash around 6:30 a.m. along State Highway 349 near County Road 4800.
Preliminary findings from crash investigators indicate that a Cadillac SRX was traveling southbound on the highway when the vehicle drifted onto the rumble strips along the roadway. Officials said the driver then attempted to correct the vehicle’s path, but the maneuver caused the SUV to cross into the northbound lanes of traffic.
Authorities said the Cadillac then collided head-on with a Mercedes that was traveling northbound on the highway at the time. The driver of the Mercedes was identified by officials as 46-year-old Samuel Lookadoo of Lubbock. According to DPS, he died at the scene as a result of the crash.
The driver of the Cadillac, identified as 21-year-old Francisco Alex Ramos Valasquez, also of Lubbock, survived the crash. Officials said he was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment of minor injuries. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported and worked to secure the area while investigators documented the incident and began reviewing the circumstances that led to the collision.
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation as troopers continue gathering details about what may have contributed to the incident. Officials often examine multiple factors in serious highway crashes, including road conditions, driver reactions, and other potential contributing circumstances.
State Highway 349 is a frequently traveled route in the region, and crashes along rural highways can present significant dangers due to higher travel speeds and limited reaction time for drivers. Safety experts often remind motorists to remain alert while driving, especially during early morning hours when visibility, fatigue, or roadway distractions can affect reaction times.
Investigators have not announced any additional findings at this time, and no further details have been released about the events leading up to the crash. Local authorities continue to encourage drivers to remain cautious on the road and to give themselves plenty of time and space to react to unexpected situations while traveling on highways.
As the investigation continues, the crash has drawn attention to the importance of defensive driving and maintaining control of a vehicle, particularly on rural roadways.
